Pits, mines, and ruins

How do I find any or all of these? I go to the encyclopedia first to find answers but it doesn't explain where they are and how to find them. I really need some help with this one.

They are everywhere around you, but they are hidden until you explore the area.

Alternative solution: there are older, more experienced players around you. Send in game messages to them, and ask them to share low level ruins with you. Once someone does this, you will see the ruin on the map.
